Dear Parents:
I am very excited to be your child’s math teacher this year! We are off to a great start. Students have been given their textbooks and are responsible to keep track of them for the remainder of the school year. Any lost or damaged math books will be subject to a fine. They must have their textbooks in math class everyday. If they would prefer to not take them home, they have access to an online textbook.
This is a great resource for parents and students. If possible please take time to visit the web site! If you do not have internet we do have discs available that may be checked out through the media center.
In Math 6 we will focus on the state math standards. The student’s grade in math will be a direct reflection of the student’s understanding of the standards and less on their timely completion of homework; this will be done with the use of assessments including paper-pencil tests, quizzes, and student-teacher conversations. Students will be expected to complete all homework; they will receive an incomplete until the work is completed (zeros will not be given). Students who consistently have late/missing work will be subject to disciplinary actions.
Students who do poorly on assessments will have the opportunity to retake the assessments. Students who wish to retake an assessment must have all previous class and homework completed and/or must complete a short study packet before they will be allowed to participate in the retake. The grade from the second assessment will be the one included in the grade book regardless of whether it is higher or lower than the original as it will reflect the student’s most current understanding of the standards.
By recording grades based on assessments (which are given after the practice is completed), a student has a better opportunity to demonstrate what he or she has learned overall. This will provide an accurate picture of what a student actually knows rather than showing how often a student makes a mistake while doing practice. In addition, by providing students with the opportunity for retakes on assessments, students are allowed to fix their mistakes and take more ownership for their performance in class.
If you have any questions or concerns, you can feel free to contact me here at Lone Star 468-4745 ext.4870, or email me at [email protected].
